Success Story: From J-1 Intern To General Manager

Explore The Successful American Journey Of Our Alumni, Pauline Brion

For over 20 years, International Trainee Network (ITN) and Odyssey International Exchange have been dedicated to guiding, assisting and facilitating transformative cultural exchange programs for thousands of participants through our BridgeUSA J-1 Intern and Trainee Programs. Our programs have provided students, graduates and young professionals with unique opportunities to explore American hospitality and culinary industries, immerse in American culture and cultural exchange, travel, and travel. They have not only helped develop both professional and personal skills but have also played a crucial role in laying the foundation for successful global careers.

Many alumni have leveraged their international experiences to secure significant roles within their industries, advancing their careers to new heights. One such inspiring alumna is Pauline Brion from the Philippines. Her American Journey began in 2012 with a J-1 Intern Program under the Route 66 Program structure. Her program experience significantly shaped her career path, leading her to her current role as the General Manager at Courtyard by Marriott in Reno, Nevada. Pauline's career in hospitality started when she pursued a Bachelor’s Degree at De La Salle-College of Saint Benilde, where she graduated with honors.

Pauline recognized early on the value of international experience and cross-cultural understanding in an increasingly globalized world. Motivated by this insight, she applied for the Route 66 Program, which offers students, graduates, and young professionals the chance to train with two different host companies in distinct locations over a period of up to 12 months.

This program not only allowed Pauline to immerse herself in American culture but also provided invaluable opportunities to learn from industry leaders, apply her academic knowledge in a practical setting, build a robust professional network, and truly understand the U.S. hospitality industry.

While we are excited to celebrate Pauline Brion's success story, we believe the best way to appreciate her American Journey is to hear it from her directly. We are excited to share an exclusive interview with Pauline, where she will recount her remarkable experiences and insights. Let’s dive into her inspiring story and the details of this exclusive interview:

1. Can you tell us a bit about yourself?

My name is Pauline Brion, and I am currently the General Manager of the Courtyard by Marriott in Reno, Nevada. Born and raised in the Philippines, I graduated with honors from DLS-College of St. Benilde with a degree in BS Hospitality, Tourism, and Institution Management.

I’m also a proud mom to my 2-year-old son, Samuel, and my 1-year-old Boxer pup, Captain.

2. When and where did you have your J-1 Intern Program?

In 2012, I completed my J-1 Internship Program, spending six months with Ocean Properties at The Sagamore Resort in Bolton Landing, New York, followed by an additional six-month period at Fiddler's Creek in Naples, Florida.

3. What motivated you to enroll in the J-1 Intern Program in the United States?

It was an exciting opportunity to train, learn, and travel in a country I had never been to before. I was fortunate to share the experience with many of my schoolmates, who eventually became like family to me as we went through the program together.

4. How would you describe our service after experiencing a full program with us?

International Trainee Network has a great partnership with Benilde. The faculty along with our representatives from ITN made it a seamless process from applying, to the actual travel, and getting grade credit for the program for Benilde.

5Can you tell us in detail what happened to you after the program and how you became successful in the hospitality industry?

After completing my first six months at The Sagamore in NY, I applied for another 6-month J-1 Program and continued my journey at Fiddler's Creek in Naples, FL. The experiences I gained at both properties were invaluable and inspired me to apply for a work visa. This visa allowed me to extend my stay in the United States and explore more opportunities. The training I received during my J-1 Program played a crucial role in helping me secure a job with a work visa. Like many others, I started as an associate, advanced to Front Office Manager, and steadily paved my way to where I am now - the General Manager of Courtyard by Marriott in Reno, Nevada.

6. Would you say that your J-1 Intern Program played any role in securing this job?

My internship contributed greatly to my success today. It taught me not only the technical skills needed to excel at my job but also invaluable life lessons that shaped my work ethic. Hospitality jobs are not for the faint of heart; the industry is incredibly cut-throat with long hours and difficult guests. However, it is also immensely gratifying. The J-1 Program provides a safe space for hospitality students to learn on the job and helps shape their decision on whether this is the career they want to pursue.
